Forests Monitor begins working with a second civil society team in Republic of Congo
12/01/09:As part of Forests Monitor’s dedication to building local civil society capacity in independent forest monitoring, a second counterpart team has been established in Republic of Congo. The team, composed of members from three local NGOs, will receive on-the-job training for one year by working closely with Forests Monitor, Resource Extraction Monitoring (REM) and government partners on all aspects of forest governance monitoring including mission planning and implementation, database development and management, reporting, and engaging various stakeholders in a process of governance reform. There are already indicators that this integrated approach is working. For example, a member of the first civil society counterpart team has developed such impressive skills that he will be one of the main trainers for the second team.
The counterpart team is composed of members from: Action pour la protection de l’environnement et le développement durable (Action for the protection of the environment and sustainable development), Le Club des Amis de l’Environnement (Friend of the Environment), and Juristes Sans Frontières (Lawyers Without Borders).
